The Story of the Four Trees

by Dhamma Tapasa (Andrew Hallas)

Once upon a time in a land not too far away, four trees started to grow on top of a small hill.

Three of the trees are very selfish, arrogant and proud trees always boasting how big and tall they will become, teasing each other how they will live forever.

The fourth tree is all happy and content, just to be a tree.

As time passes the three proud and selfish trees spend all their days growing as tall and impressive as they can, boasting how wonderful they will become.

The fourth tree listens but is all happy and content, just to be a tree.

Many years pass and the three trees all look impressive and have grown straight and tall, but they have grown ever more arrogant, selfish and proud, boasting and teasing constantly how they are better than the other and how surely, they will now live forever.

The fourth tree isn’t the best looking or the tallest but is all happy and content, just to be a tree.

The woodcutter comes along and cuts the three proud, arrogant trees down to the ground. The first tree is made into the City Gates, the second tree a Great Warship and the third tree into a Great Place of Worship.

Each of the three trees is proud and happy of their new position in society, boasting that they are better than the other and how they really will live forever.

The fourth tree is all happy and content, just to be a tree.

A great army comes to attack, the City Gates are destroyed, the great Warship is sunk in the harbor and the Great Place of Worship burnt to the ground.

Only the fourth tree survives growing on the hill all happy and content, just to be a tree.

The fourth tree knows that it cannot live forever. That the day must come when the fourth tree will too pass away,

But not before it sets seed, to Four little Trees growing on that hill,

all Happy and Content, just to be a tree!

Moral of Story:

Impermanence is the nature of everything, when we truly know the impermanence in ourselves and others, we understand how every moment is precious. All that matters in life is to live each moment truly happy and content.

ACC Corner – Joe Rochel, ACC Chairperson

Hello my fellow Carolina Shores Community homeowners,

I believe it is important to address these few items regarding the Rules & Regulations:

When a you received a violation letter, please remember the first letter is a COURTESY letter. And as such, this first letter states there is a possible violation. This letter asks the homeowner to please respond within seven (7) days from receipt of the letter. The importance of this request is to discuss the issue and how it needs to be resolved.

The request for a permit for any work to be done on the exterior of the home is very important to the homeowner for their protection and records. Please remember that any work done on the outside of your home, except for normal landscaping, requires a permit.

It is important for both the CSPOA and the TOWN Tree Removal request forms be filled out in order for the ACC volunteers to go to your home to review your request. Please NOTE the ACC volunteers will be at your home in the morning between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. We will call the day prior to going out to let you know we will be at your home during these hours. If you cannot be at home then you may not receive permission for all the trees requested, due to not having you available to discuss the reason for your request. If you remove trees without a permit, you could be fined. These fines are set by the CSPOA Board of Directors.

The rules and regulations are at times modified so please check with the CSPOA office if you have any questions.

There is a new requirement for all firepits you want to install on your premises. Please contact the CSPOA for information on the approval process. We believe this is a very important requirement since the Town of Carolina Shores does not have any Ordinance restricting any open burning within the Carolina Shores area of the Township. Please help all of us to prevent a major fire from starting within our neighborhood. Thank you.

The summer season is approaching in the very near future. Now is the best time to have the lawn fertilizer and weed preemergence put down to help your lawn grow strong and healthy. Remember that watering your lawn should only be three times a week to let the water soak into the ground. That will help the grass roots to grow into the ground to seek water. Too frequent watering will only weaken the grass roots and cause the grass to die off from fungus and too wet ground. I hope this is helpful to homeowners that are new to this area.

JOE’S SAYING: “HELP ME HELP YOU”

Recreation Facilities – Kelly Wilson

A picture containing icon

Description automatically generatedThe recreation area has received its annual power washing for another year. Furniture will be getting cleaned, refreshed and repaired for the new season. Pool water will be clean and as always a great refresher during the day. Water aerobics will again be offered at the pool so please watch for information as we move forward. The flowers are blooming, fresh mulch will be laid and spring fever has had a head start this year with the warm weather. Everyone wants to begin going outside more and with the summer just around the corner, we look forward to seeing everyone again. As we have done in the past, our opening day will be Mothers Day, May 14. Please look for more to come in next month’s bulletin.

The pickle ball courts are always ready for play and tennis is in full swing in the mornings. Wine in the Park has begun under the pavilion, the pool area has begun its transformation and bocci courts will be getting a face lift. We hope all members within the neighborhood take advantage of all of the great amenities we have available here along with some great events planned.

A new AED machine was installed at the pool this year. It is located in the bathroom hall next to the emergency phone used for 911.

We know parking is at its maximum at the recreation area at times, but we want to remind everyone we try hard in maintaining the lawns to look good. Please do not park on the grass in front of the tennis courts but only on the tree line side towards the road. During special events such as picnics where we have the POA members’ events and the parking lot is full, then we will use the grass area as an emergency overflow parking area.

Recreation Committee – Mary Ann Williams

Memorial Day Weekend Picnic

The Carolina Shores POA annual Memorial Day Weekend Picnic will be held on Sunday, May 28. Tickets will be distributed by members of the Recreation Committee at the POA clubhouse (not the office) from Monday, May 1, through Thursday, May 4, and again the following week from Monday, May 8, though Thursday, May 11. Saturday, May 6, will be an additional distribution day for those who work. Distribution times will be from 10:00 a.m. until noon. Due to parking constraints, there is a limit of 325 tickets, so get yours early - first come, first served!  (No tickets will be issued after the deadline, and no one will be admitted without a ticket.) Tickets are complimentary to POA residents only. Due to the continued growth of our neighborhood, we will not be able to accommodate outside guests at this event.

This year’s menu will consist of pork bar-b-q, chicken tenders, coleslaw, baked beans, rolls, sweet and unsweet tea, and water - all catered by Smithfield’s Chicken ‘N Bar-B-Q of Shallotte. Bring any other beverage and sweet dessert that you might want for yourself. (There will not be a dessert sharing table this year.) The time will be from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the POA pavilion and picnic grounds by the pool.  Food will be served from 2:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.

Also, as a friendly but important reminder, if you pick up tickets and subsequently find that you are unable to attend, PLEASE return them to the POA office or call to cancel by May 16. In order to continue providing our residents with this activity, paid for with recreation funds, it is important that we only be charged for meals contracted with the caterer. After the final count is given, we are obligated for that amount.  It is in all our interests not to pay for “no shows”.

Come join us for this fun, community-wide event!

Happy Hour in the Park

“Happy Hour in the Park” for the month of May will be held Friday, May 19, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., at the POA pavilion and picnic grounds by the pool. This fun, informal event happens on the third Friday of the month, weather permitting.

BYOB and any snacks or food items you may want and enjoy an early evening get-together. It was wonderful to meet so many new neighbors at April’s Happy Hour in the Park - let’s hope the weather will be just as perfect for our May event! There are no organized plans, just a great opportunity for conversation and camaraderie.

The Carolina Shores Recreation/Social Committee is looking forward to providing these and many more enjoyable opportunities for our residents to meet, greet and share good times! Look for details in the bulletin and emails about these upcoming events:

Our next meeting will be held on Friday, May 19, at 10:00 a.m. in the main room of the POA clubhouse.
